Handy Skills courses can be tailored to suit your skill requirements; hands-on they will give you the confidence to work on your own. Just select the modules needed from the list below:
1 Week Bricklaying
A hands on course designed to give people as much practical experience in 5 days as possible. This course is suitable for people of all abilities. It teaches theory and practical knowledge of bricklaying, enabling you to build walls using bricks and blocks.
1 or 2 Week Tiling
Our Tiling short courses are designed to give the basic Tiling skills and information necessary to cover most situations. The courses is spilt roughly into 50% walls and 50% floors giving enough time to cover the necessary skills to enable the student to carry out most installations they may come across. Skills covered including estimating, marking out, setting out, cutting of tiles (both manual and machine techniques) fixing and grouting. Also included within the course is a business start up seminar covering, how to start your business, advertising and marketing and obtaining work.
1 Week Plastering
Designed for people wanting to learn the skill of plastering, having little or no experience. This hands on course covers the cutting & fixing of plasterboard, preparation of surfaces, backing coats, how to apply finishing coats, fixing stop beads, drip beads and angle beads.
1 Week Plumbing
A hands-on course, designed to give trainees as much practical experience as possible. Giving maximum pipe skills in the 5 days, mainly working in copper but including flexible connectors and plastic pipe. Includes fitting a kitchen sink, washing machine and a complete bathroom suite. You will cover central heating systems, including theory, stripping down and reassembling a water pump, bleeding and draining of radiators and hot water tanks.
1 Week Drylining & Jointing
You will be taught the correct method for measuring, cutting and fixing plasterboard, how fix to difficult obstacles, door & window returns, splayed walls & ceilings. You will taught how to dot and dab to fix the plasterboard.
1 Week Artexing
This course is suitable for the complete novice and for those with a limited knowledge of artexing. Firstly covering the correct method of applying plasterboard to ceilings, n you will then cover preparations and treatments to seal or prime different surfaces on ceilings and walls ready for artexing. You then will be taught various patterns including, stipple swirl, broken leather, scroll, broken swirl and many more.
1 Week Kitchen Fitting
Designed to each you the skills of Kitchen Fitting, whilst on the course you fit a complete Kitchen from plan, covering ready made units, flat pack units, work tops (including joints), wall units, kick boards, cornice and door furniture. A plan of the Kitchen you will fit is available on request. At the end of the course you should be able to fit a Kitchen with confidence.
1 Week Partition Walls, Doors & Mouldings
Designed to give the ability to plan and build stud partition walls with confidence. The walls constructed include doors and window openings, then the marking out of, cutting and fixing of internal doorframes. An internal door is then hung on the frame and door furniture fitted. The skirting and architraves are then fitted to the installation.
1 Week Floor Joist Work & Roofs Course
The course covers building of flooring and roofing (including flat and pitched roofs), covering not only the practical aspects, but the theory and Building Regulations as well. Joist work covered includes fixing openings and strutting for chimney breasts and staircases. You will then move on to roofs, constructing both a flat roof and a pitched roof, including firings and deckings, fascia soffits and battens.
